6 Spooky VR Myths and Why They’re Horrifically Wrong

As people prepare to face their fears this Halloween, some are undoubtedly fearful of the unfamiliar. As a form of technology not everyone has tried, virtual reality is a big fear for many. In recent years it has become especially apparent, with movies such as Ready Player One perpetuating the idea that VR is dangerous and scary. We’re here to debunk 6 spooky VR myths that people may believe, and show you why it’s not so terrifying after all.

Myth #1: VR is bad for your eyes

Much like the old wives’ tale of TV damaging eyesight, there is a large misconception that VR is bad for your eyes. While prolonged VR use is not recommended for children, it is largely harmless for adults, and can even help improve your eyesight if used as directed by an optometrist. Myth #2: It will make you sick

Although VR use can make some people feel nauseous, VR cannot make you sick. As with any other screened device, taking regular breaks is key. We recommend taking a break at least every twenty minutes or so for a few minutes to rest your eyes, and reduce the chance of eye strain and headaches. 

Myth #3: It’s a gimmick

VR has been around since the 1960s, and was present in science fiction even before then. It may have a unique use, but it is not a gimmick or a fad, and has been slowly developed and improved upon over the years. Many industries are finding uses for it, and its prevalence is growing over time. Even now, VR is improving and adapting.

Myth #4: It’s only for the tech-savvy

Many people choose to believe that VR is too complicated for them, because they don’t understand or aren’t familiar with it. This is simply not true. In recent years, companies developing VR headsets have been more interested in making them as easy to use as possible. Myth #5: VR isn’t healthy

There is a belief that VR isn’t good for your body, and will discourage exercise. However, virtual reality can actually help you when it comes to physical activity. Many apps will cause you to work up a sweat, like Beat Saber and Thrill of the Fight. Apps such as Guided Tai Chi also make performing stretches easier. If you prefer a human instructor, you can even hop onto VR Chat or Altspace, and have someone guide you in real time from the comfort of your home. Convenience is a big factor of VR, and it may be a better solution for people who find it difficult to go to the gym.

Myth #6: VR Will Take Over Real Life

Popularised by media, there is a common misconception that virtual reality will somehow ‘take over’ or ‘rule over’ our lives. VR is an immersive tool, but it can’t replace real life. Rather, it can help us experience scenarios that otherwise would be dangerous or impossible to encounter in real life. This immersion is extremely useful for a variety of things, including training, education, entertainment, and engineering. VR is also an opt-in experience – you have control over when you want to use it. We recommend using VR in healthy doses for the best possible experience.
